Protecting & promoting riders' rights in Europe


The Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA) is the European federation of national road rider organisations. FEMA represents, defends and promotes motorcycling and the interests of million powered two-wheeler users across Europe. Through its 25 national organisations from 20 countries, FEMA reaches over 300,000 dedicated motorcyclists representing all social groups.

FEMA's primary objective is to represent European motorcyclists both within the European Union and agencies of the United Nations.

In Norway in June 2009 a 16 year old rider was hit by a car and received serious injuries. The young Norwegian had ridden his red colored bike in the middle of his lane in a queue of cars at around 60 km/h when he was hit by a motorist violating the give way sign. As FEMA previously reported, the motorist was found not guilty. Now the sentence has been appealed.

Electric motorcycle racing is still in its infancy, but even so, two competing racing series already exist: TTXPG and FIM e-Power. TTXGP launched the first ever electric series and even managed to organize a race for electric bikes on the famous Isle of Man. This year however, the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) decided to organize its own series, in direct competition with TTXGP.

On Tuesday 20 July the European Commission published its new Road Safety Action Programm[1] (RSAP) for the upcoming 10 years. The goal is to make European roads and traffic safer and to half the number of road deaths by 2020.

The FEMA committee agreed during its meeting in Geneva at the end of May to admit the Icelandic Motorcyclists' Association (BLS) as full committee member. The Motorcycle Associations of the Czech Republic and Malta were accorded observer status.
